Choosing the right access control system

Your access control system shouldn’t make your life more complicated. Physical security is the first and most important aspect in how you choose the best access control system for your needs. Current Proxy customers that will need to replace their systems should pay specific attention to the following factors when comparing access control reviews. If your new solution isn’t interoperable with the access methods, applications and building systems you use, it’s not a future-proof option. Here’s what to look for in a future-proof access control system:

Cloud-based system – Running your access control platform in the cloud gives you greater flexibility. Both Proxy and Avigilon Alta use cloud-based management software for instant upgrades and remote management of the entire platform. Plus, you’ll be able to activate the newest features instantly without needing a technician to come on site for setup. Because Avigilon is also backward compatible with legacy hardware and systems, it’s easy to make the switch from Proxy Access to Avigilon Alta’s cloud solution.

Open architecture – Selecting access control with open API and mobile SDKs, like Proxy or Avigilon Alta, allows for easy integrations with other applications and IoT systems. Integrated building systems help businesses create a more complete security solution by connecting user directories, tenant management platforms, operational systems and video camera technology to your access control system. Everything can be managed from one interface, rather than disparate platforms. Many access control solutions have native integrations that are ready to use right out of the box, so check to make sure your provider can connect to the programs you use.

Credential support – Before you choose an access control system, make sure it can support all the access methods you want to use now and in the future. Some mobile access control providers are unable to support legacy credentials like key cards and fobs. Avigilon multi-technology Smart Readers and Video Readers support hands-free mobile credentials, as well as unlock via the smartphone app (iOS and Android), Apple Watch app, tablet apps, plus legacy key cards and fobs.

Backward compatibility – As of the date of this Proxy Access review, current Proxy customers will need to find a new access solution as Proxy end-of-lifes their door readers. Proxy required existing access control system hardware, and only provided the entry and exit experience with readers and mobile credentials. If you don’t want to rip and replace your existing access control system, Avigilon is a great choice, as it is also backward compatible with legacy systems. Proxy was compatible only with controllers that support Wiegand/OSDP, and a Proxy Mobile Access Connector was often needed for the system to function.

Hands-free and touchless access

To optimize the experience in your building, choose a system with touchless access. Touchless entry and exit are both more convenient and more hygienic than key cards or PIN keypads. Both Proxy and Avigilon Alta offer hands-free, touchless capabilities using BLE signals. Proxy’s touchless access control used Bluetooth signals to recognize users and trigger an unlock, but there was no way to show intent of unlocking the door. This could pose a security threat. For instance, a tailgater could wait for the door to accidentally be unlocked by a user passing by and sneak right in.

Avigilon Alta’s touchless access uses the same reliable BLE signals, in addition to Wi-Fi and cellular data, for its Wave to Unlock capabilities. However, it’s more secure because the user shows intent to enter by waving their hand in front of the reader. This safer alternative ensures the door is only unlocked when somebody actually requests authorization. It’s still convenient, as the app doesn’t need to be open and the user doesn’t need to take their phone out. Touchless access door readers also should have the best data security protection to prevent somebody from intercepting confidential information. Avigilon Alta’s system is encrypted end-to-end, with no data stored locally on the reader for enhanced security.

Proxy hardware review and costs

Prior to announcing the discontinuation of Proxy Access, the Proxy access control product line consisted of reader hardware and a cloud-based software platform. The cloud-based Proxy system required existing access control servers and controller hardware to be installed, as they did not provide the backend hardware. Proxy readers are installed and connected to existing systems via Weigand protocol, which can limit security and features to what the existing access control system supports. Proxy also offered a Connector product to connect disparate access control systems in the same building to the Proxy cloud platform.

To avoid issues like dealing with multiple vendors for system upgrades, current Proxy customers should select a new provider with a complete access control solution for a better experience. With a company that offers the full line of hardware and software products to install and manage your access control system, you’ll have one less headache to deal with. Avigilon provides its customers with modular controller hardware, plus Smart Readers that are award-winning for design and Pro Series Video Readers with a high-definition camera built directly into the reader. The cloud-based software platform is easy to configure and allows you to manage the entire system remotely. The Avigilon solution offers a complete, customizable system for any size organization.

Video options with Proxy Access

Access control and video security are essential to physical security, especially as remote building management becomes more prevalent. This is why it’s vital that your access control system can support a fully integrated VMS. While Proxy Access API did allow for some integrations, at the time of this Proxy Access review, there are no native video management or video surveillance integrations available. In addition, Proxy hardware only supported door reader capabilities, with no options for visual monitoring.

Organizations that want the power of visual verification throughout their space would have a better experience with an access control solution built to support native video. Avigilon’s Video Reader Pro comes equipped with a video camera built into the reader, so you only have to install a single device at the door. Plus, with out-of-the-box integrations with leading VMS providers including Cisco Meraki, Milestone, Camio and Rhombus Systems, Avigilon Alta gives teams a more complete view of what’s happening throughout their space.

Access control scalability

When choosing an access control system, ensure the solution has features that are designed to scale with your business. Similar to Proxy, Avigilon Alta has a cloud-based platform that allows you to manage your entire deployment from your personal device, anywhere in the world. However, because Proxy is no longer manufacturing door controller hardware and relies on existing systems, adding new doors could pose problems for scaling your system. You will need to roll up a truck from another provider to install new hardware, change inputs, or rip and replace the existing system. And if the new readers aren’t compatible with Proxy Access, you’ll be back to managing two disparate door security systems.

Avigilon Alta, on the other hand, is designed to scale effortlessly. With a full controller lineup including a Single Door Controller, 4‑door and 8‑door controllers, plus boards for elevator deployments, you can easily secure a single site or up to hundreds of doors across locations. It’s quick and easy to add or remove doors from your network any time you need in the remotely accessible dashboard, too.

Mobile credentials are a more cost-efficient access method, as key cards and fobs can add up quickly, but not all mobile access control systems are budget-friendly. Make sure your new system can support unlimited mobile credentials, so you never have to worry about starting over with a new system.

Larger organizations should also look for enterprise-class features to streamline operations across locations. Open platform systems allow you to build an integrated building solution that eliminates overspending and reduces administrative burdens. With native video management integrations and features like granular site permissions built in, Avigilon’s Premium and Enterprise packages are perfect for multi-site businesses. The Avigilon Alta Rules Engine feature allows you to customize event triggers. For example, if a door is left ajar in your building, you can configure the system to send a notification to the correct personnel, depending on the building site or even time of day.

Available access control integrations

Deploying integrations throughout your IoT building is a smart way to streamline your operations and improve processes. Integrated building systems reduce overhead and save you money, not to mention make everyone’s lives a little easier. When comparing other systems and Proxy access control reviews, Proxy’s APIs and mobile SDKs take some work to set up, lacking native or out-of-the-box integrations. When looking for a replacement for Proxy Access door security, organizations should choose providers with easy-to-install apps and integrations that are simple to configure.

Avigilon has an extensive list of available integrations, with over 40 apps in their App Marketplace that work seamlessly, with simple, straightforward setup. Create a robust, full-building solution with directory management tools (G Suite and Active Directory are favorites among Avigilon customers), tenant and visitor platforms, native video surveillance systems, and apps like Slack and Zendesk.

Plus, Avigilon has partnered with 15+ leading technology companies to offer best-in-class safety and wellness solutions to prepare buildings to reopen after COVID-19. These robust safety features include automating health questionnaires and temperature screening measures as part of your access control authentication, and enforcing social distancing through capacity tracking and occupancy management tools. Avigilon Alta’s touchless access control also reduces common touch points from the moment you walk up to the door.

The ultimate guide to access control

Learn everything you need to successfully future-proof your physical access control system with this buyer’s guide.

Access control security and compliance

Access control isn’t just about how you get in and out of the building. With growing concern over cybersecurity and protecting personal information in the workplace, your building security needs to take additional steps to prevent threats. Outdated hardware is a major risk factor for any security system, and as Proxy phases out the Proxy Access products, existing customers may be left vulnerable.

Your physical security system should adhere to the highest standards in security, privacy and data protection. Avigilon access control is SOC 2 (Type 1 and Type 2) and CCPA compliant. The Avigilon hardware is also UL 294 and FCC compliant, and meets European and Canadian standards. Avigilon readers are IP65 rated and the system helps you meet your physical security requirements, like GDPR, HIPAA and PCI.

Another factor of access control security is the reliability of the hardware. Avigilon is designed with fail-safes and backup battery options to withstand power outages. Prevent data theft with Avigilon’s tamper-resistant hardware with built-in alerts to notify you of an incident. Plus, Avigilon readers don’t store any local data, and all communication is heavily encrypted to the highest standards for enhanced cybersecurity.

In case of an emergency at your building, having access control with proactive security features, like building lockdown, will keep people safe and help you mitigate threats quickly. Proxy does not offer a lockdown feature, so any current customers cannot take advantage of this necessary safety functionality. Avigilon Alta comes with an award-winning Lockdown feature, which lets you lock down every door in your system at the touch of a button, from any device. Plan for different types of emergencies at all of your structures with the Premium Flexible Lockdown plans for a fully customizable security strategy. Notify emergency personnel and set up alerts, so you always know what’s happening on your property in real time.
