This week, we sat down with Bryon Wheaton, Sales Engineering Manager for Central North America, to learn how he contributes to quality at Avigilon.
What made you want to work in the security technology industry? How did you end up at Avigilon?
Bryon Wheaton (BW): I’ve always had an interest in technology. I studied computer science and information systems in college while working at a copy and print business, which gave me the opportunity to work on devices in a network environment. I used that experience as a springboard to land an apprenticeship in limited energy systems where I worked as a technician configuring and maintaining life safety and security systems.
After a few years, I took some additional courses in project management and moved into the planning and design of these systems. I began working at Avigilon to bring my experience to a broader audience, using my skills to make a larger impact, and I was excited to join such a dynamic team.
Tell us a bit about your role at Avigilon, a Motorola Solutions company, and what you like about it.
BW: My primary role in the Video Security Solutions team is to empower others to be successful. I provide guidance and support to our sales engineers, who in turn support our sales team and customers in central North America. While most of my time is spent supporting sales from a technical aspect, the time I spend meeting with customers is the most rewarding. I love hearing from them what challenges they face and then coming up with creative solutions, using our technology to help them overcome those challenges.
In terms of work-life balance, I’m based out of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, and I love it here. We have a high quality of life — a great education system, lots of strong companies, a thriving arts and culture scene, and fantastic culinary options.
What aspect of your work are you most proud of?
BW: I’m proud to work for the Motorola Solutions Video Security Solutions team because we are at the forefront of harnessing technology to help people be their best in the moments that matter the most. From intuitive software to AI-powered video analytics, we bring so many exciting tools to our customers that can improve their daily workflows while keeping people and communities safer. We continue to innovate and develop new technologies to address real-world problems, and that’s incredibly rewarding.
I am also proud of the level of quality we deliver to our customers. To me, quality matters because our customers are looking for value. By working closely with us and our Partners to understand what matters most, we can help design and configure the most flexible, responsive and state-of-the-art security solutions that provide incredible value to their organizations.
Speaking of quality, how do you deliver quality to customers in your role, specifically?
BW: Customers trust Avigilon to help them respond to what matters most. By thinking about quality in the design phase of any project, we help ensure any system is responsive to the things that matter. We carefully consider image composition, settings, bandwidth, storage and all of the practical elements that make a quality system deployment. I feel I’m best at communicating these technology concepts to our customers in a clear and thoughtful manner so they can see how our solutions can serve their organization effectively.
